Our world is mostly black and white, parted in right and wrong.
People with different cultural identities fail to understand each other due to prejudice, stereotyping, racism and homophobia.
Imagine a world, where all the black and white is replaced by beautiful colors flowing through our society.
A world, where the social boundaries become more fluid.
A world where everyone can be themselves, no one is judged for their preferences or identities.
A world, where everything and everyone goes in its own flow side by side.
It describes how willing people are to consider other perspectives or to try out new experiences. It also encompasses the belief that other people should be free to express their beliefs and arguments, even if you do not necessarily agree with those views. Even if you consider yourself a fairly open-minded person, there are probably certain topics on which you take a much harder stance. Being open-minded means having the ability to consider other perspectives and trying to be empathetic to other people.
Even the most “open” and “curious” among us have to actively and consciously take steps to improve their mental models. The good news is, you can do something to be more fluid towards different approaches of live, even if you are more rigid or less receptive to the new ideas and experiences.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Sometimes, the only way to learn more about a certain situation and keep an open mind is to ask a lot of questions to gain a better understanding. It might provide insights that you hadn’t considered before.
Avoid closing yourself off.
Welcome new situations that are different from those you’re familiar with. When you’re exposed to differing opinions, look at them as learning experiences.
Fight the urge to react in anger when you hear differing opinions.
Instead, take a moment to yourself to find the wisdom to understand that everyone will not hold the same opinions as you. Try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes.
Stay social and make new friends.
You’ll find that you’re more likely to discover new opportunities to try new things when you stay social. When you make a new friend, they’ll likely have a unique set of interests for you to learn from in order to broaden your horizons.
Go out and make your own experiences before you form opinions about something. Rather than blindly believing what someone else says, or assuming that you won’t like it, find out for yourself if you like something or not. This could be as simple as trying new food, activity, or hobby.
